One of the popular travel guides has named Edinburgh as one of the top 6 ‘hotspots’ to watch out for this coming New Year. Other cities that were present in the list are: Berlin, Rio de Janeiro, Madrid, New York and Sydney. This guide was published by the Travel magazine. It highlighted the Hogmanay concert as one of the key selling points although it did not consider it to be very impressive. It suggests visitors not to go for the castle during midnight in order to avoid getting trampled. Instead, it suggests to go to ‘Heights’, at the top of Apex International Hotel, in order to enjoy brilliant views of fireworks exploding in the skyline.

There are going to be 3 days full of celebrations to welcome the new year. During this time period, a maximum of 150,000 is expected in footfall for the Hogmanay celebrations. The torchlight procession that will happen on the 30th of December will kick off the series of events. Last year, this event had 30,000 spectators. There will also be the “Loony Dook” event on the 1st of January. This event is the one in which many people dressed in fancy outfits dive into the river Forth.

Biffy Clyro will be the centre of attraction at the main concert. It has been sold-out already. Other celebrations are to occur at the street party, which also has live performances.

This year, the celebrations have received an overhaul. They will also have a new event named as “Old Town Ceilidh” which combines food, drink and traditional music in the old section of the Scottish capital.

Richard Lewis, who is a member of the Edinburgh city council, said that as a part of the celebrations, they are also planning to have the longest running Strip the Willow dance in history.
