Tips for Planning a Weekend Getaway

By on May 15, 2016

You work hard all week, so when Friday afternoon rolls around you deserve to take some time for yourself and relax. Instead of just spending the weekend sitting around the house and watching TV, why not go somewhere else for a bit of adventure and change of scenery?

If you leave on Friday right after work, you can stay two nights somewhere different before returning on Sunday. A weekend getaway can be a great way to escape the stress of your daily life, whether you go with your partner, with your family or by yourself. Although it will be a relatively short vacation, you can do a lot on a weekend and by the time you return to work on Monday you will be well rested, invigorated and inspired by everything you have seen and done.

Planning Your Getaway

So, how do you plan a weekend getaway? Here are some helpful tips that you can keep in mind:

  • If it is possible, try to take either the Friday or the Monday off work. It will give you so much more time and makes your weekend getaway into something more substantial. You can do more with 3 days away than you can with only two.
  • Think about the style of getaway you are interested in. Do you want a cultural city break with museums, art galleries, shopping, theatre and restaurants? Or, do you want a quite retreat in the countryside where you can go hiking and enjoy peace and quiet? Or, maybe you want a beachside vacation where you can sip cold fruity drinks with your toes in the sand? Once you figure out what you want from your getaway, you will be able to narrow down where you want to go.
  • It’s best to keep an open mind about your destination, as this will give you more flexibility when finding deals. For example, if you are planning a city break you might have had your eyes on Paris, but you could see an amazing deal for a weekend flight to Berlin. If you are willing to be flexible and discover what Berlin has to offer, you could save a lot of money.
  • If you don’t have a huge budget, look for a destination that is close to home. You don’t want to spend your entire weekend in transit either. When you find the right spot and if you have the right attitude, anywhere can be an adventure – even in your own hometown.
  • Once you have chosen where to go, you can start planning the activities you will do when you get there. You might want to have a chilled out weekend where you go very little except swim in the pool, read a good book and drink wine. Or, you might want to have an action packed weekend filled with adventure sports or cultural activities – it’s totally up to you.
  • Don’t just book the first flight or hotel you see – you can save a lot of money with a little bit of research. Take the time to comparison shop so that you can save.
  • If you are booking your weekend getaway at the last minute, take a look at the last minute deals online for accommodation, flights, car rentals, etc.
  • Take a look at some of the packages offered by hotels, such as Golf and Spa Breaks, they can often offer great value.
  • Instead of staying in a hotel, consider using AirBnB to find a room in someone’s house or an apartment instead. It is often cheaper and you have the benefit of possibly staying wiith a local who can give you insider advice on what to do in that city.
  • Make sure that you switch off your phone and don’t bring your laptop. You can catch up on emails on Monday, but don’t let work distractions take away from your weekend escape. You want to fully enjoy the time on your short holiday.
  • Keep your luggage light! You’re only going for two or three days, so you don’t need to bring a lot of clothes. Packing light will mean much less hassle and if you are flying it might mean that you can get away with only taking carry-on luggage – saving you a lot of time and money.

Keep these tips in mind so that you can plan your weekend getaway and have a fantastic short escape somewhere beautiful, such as the lovely Carden Park near Chester.
